Batman 4Paws knows that adopting a pet is always a fun and rewarding event to experience. Especially during the coronavirus lockdown, it can be worthwhile to share your world with a furry friend. Here’s everything you need to know about bringing a pet home in these trying times.

Choose the Right Type of Pet

From your family’s needs to where you live, choosing the right furry friend is essential. Consider what animal would suit your household best.

  • If your household has allergies, select a pet that poses less risk.
  • Think carefully about choosing the pet that’s perfect for your family.
  • Consider a low-maintenance animal if you aren’t normally home often.

Get Pet Supplies and Spaces Ready

Once you decide which type of pet to adopt, you need to prepare. Getting your home and supplies ready is the next step.

  • Take steps to pet-proof your house.
  • Gather necessary pet supplies, and use a Chewy promo code to save.
  • Prepare for cleaning up after your new pet—and their odors.
  • Budget for cleaning supplies and maybe even as-needed steam
  • Allow your new dog or cat time to adjust to their new home.

Plan for Post-Pandemic Pet Ownership

Adopting a pet during the coronavirus pandemic is a big decision. Be sure you can care for your pet when life returns to normal.

  • Choose a trustworthy team to handle your pet’s grooming
  • Set aside funds to ensure you can afford your pet’s expenses.
  • Cover your pet’s health and wellness needs with pet insurance.

Welcoming a new pet into your home could be the best decision you ever make. But considering the current pandemic, it’s worth thinking carefully before adopting a pet. Know what animal is the right fit for your family, plan for their arrival, and make sure you can handle pet ownership long term, too.

“Should I Adopt Over Buying A Dog?"

The simple answer is YES. But if you still aren’t totally convinced, here are a few of the top reasons why Batman is a firm believers in adopting animals.

Reasons to adopt over buy a pet:

  • Because adoption helps more than just one animal. When you adopt one animal, there is room for another one to replace it in a shelter (sad but true), meaning there’s more room for those waiting to be adopted — which slows down the rate of animals getting euthanized.

  • It saves you money. Adopting is much cheaper than buying puppies or kittens at a pet store. And besides the heartfelt reasons, it also helps keep money in your wallet.

  • You save a life. If you or no one else adopts the animal, they more than likely will be euthanized (killed). You’ll feel better saving an animal, and the animal will love you so much more after finally finding a loving home. Trust us, they appreciate it.

  • It’s good for your health (and conscious). According to scientists, it’s been proven that pet owners tend to have lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Dogs also reduce stress and prevent loneliness. Having a companion that depends on you to feed and love it gives you responsibility and meaning in your day.

Bringing a Rescued Dog Home: How to Give Them a Good Home for the Rest of Their Lives

Adopting a rescued dog from a pound or shelter might not be for everyone, but it can be a greatly rewarding experience. Many of these dogs come from puppy mills, rescued from the streets or an abusive home, or simply given up by a family who can no longer take care of them. As a result of these negative past experiences, rescued dogs often have physical or emotional trauma that makes it difficult for them to adjust to a new home. Many of them are extremely shy and wary of people, while others can become overly aggressive or possessive of food or toys. There are also many happy dogs who make easily make friends with other dogs and humans.

It’s Not a Decision to Make Lightly

When you visit a pound or shelter and see these animals, you might feel that tug in your heart that makes you want to take them home on the spot. However, you should talk to the shelter staff to know more about the dog’s history and whether they have any current medical needs or behavioral problems as a result of their past. Bringing home these dogs will not be the same as taking home a puppy or even an adult dog who is happy, healthy, and well-adjusted. Often times, they do not know how to act like a “normal” dog and it might take a significant amount of care, attention, and patience on your part before you can earn their trust.

Many abused dogs may need special or specific circumstances to be able to have a happy and healthy life in your home, and you might need to make drastic changes in your lifestyle before you can adopt them. You need to ask yourself whether you are ready to take on this responsibility before you decide on taking home an abused dog.

It’s Not ALL Bad News, Though

When you consider the fact that most shelters and pounds are constantly filled to capacity, you will actually be helping in so many ways if you do decide to adopt an abused dog. Not only will you be giving an animal a new lease on life, but you will also be helping these animal care providers have more space and resources to help other animals in need.

Dogs are social creatures at heart and they DO want to have a safe and loving relationship if given the chance. As long as you commit to taking that extra step in giving them the love and care that they need to heal, they will eventually become a loyal and loving part of your home.

How to Help a Dog Heal

There is no fixed set of rules to rehabilitate an abused dog as each dog may have gone through different types of trauma and may express themselves differently. However, there are some steps that you should take that will help any abused dog to heal from their past.

 1.      Give them a Safe Environment

This is the most important thing to consider when you bring home an abused dog: they need to feel safe in their new home. Find a quiet place where they can sleep, relax, and eat. Use accessories such as a collar that fits well (but does not hurt), as well as a lightweight leash.

2.      Be Patient, Especially During the Beginning

During the first few days, your new dog might be wary, shy, or even aggressive. You need to be patient and understand that they might still feel afraid and they are acting naturally. Never show frustration or impatience even if they are progressing slowly because dogs can easily pick up on these negative emotions and you will find yourself back at square one.

3.      Find How They Respond and Use It

Dogs respond to positive reinforcement, and you need to find that stimulus. Some dogs respond well to food, while others respond well to praise and play. Most abused dogs, however, respond better to food because it helps establish trust. If possible, hand-feed your dog during their first few days so that they can associate you with something positive like food.

4.      Let Them Feel Control

When you take your dog home, they might feel like the situation is once again out of their control because they are faced with an unfamiliar environment. Let them feel like they have their own space in your home and that you respect this space. If they do not feel like playing or eating, don’t force the issue. Simply set it aside for now and just sit beside or near them while talking to them in a calm voice.

5.      Ask the Experts

As mentioned above, rehabilitating an abused dog can be a difficult task and sometimes you need to ask for help. You can consult a dog wellness guide online to see if there are things that you need to change in your routine. You can also consult a vet or a dog behavioral expert for their advice.

Hello there good citizens! Batman had the awesome opportunity to help Rescue Transport USA and Doobert get 4 special needs Kittens who have a condition called Cerebellar Hypoplasia  to an experienced foster. This is a neurological disease found in numerous species of animals. Cerebellar Hypoplasia happens when the cerebellum of the brain fails to develop properly. The cerebellum is the portion of the brain that controls fine motor skills, balance and coordination. The condition isn’t painful or contagious. CH usually occurs when a pregnant cat becomes infected with feline Panleukopenia virus and then passes the infection to her unborn kittens. The Panleukopenia virus preferentially attacks rapidly dividing cells. During the perinatal period (which is the last weeks of pregnancy and the first weeks after birth) the cerebellum is undergoing rapid growth and development, making it vulnerable to attack by the virus. The condition may only affect one kitten in a litter, or may involve all littermates. In this case it involved 4 out of the 5 kittens. The stray momma kitty was found and taken in and the kittens that needed special care made it down to Palm Bay, Florida from West Virginia Safely.

They were adorable!

Batman and Robin were able to get a Schnauzer named Linda from Miami to a forever home up in South Carolina. Linda’s story is quite intriguing and begins in Venezuela, which has been ravaged by corruption and reckless economic policy as of late. These policies have created a serious economic decline in the country. People are struggling to find food to eat themselves let alone feed their pets. Linda’s owner in Venezuela luckily knew some people in government and instead of getting her self out chose to get her precious Schnauzer out. That’s when she met her new foster momma and guarding angel Lizzette with God Made Dog Rescue. Lizzette and a man named Howie helped nurse the emaciated Linda Back to good health and even got 3 possibly cancerous tumors taken care of. Lizzette was also able to find her a loving furever home with a woman named Rosemary. Batman and Robin were happy to answer the call and assist in getting this doggo to her forever home where she is finally able to rest easy with a full belly.  Batman Rosemary and LIndaLinda's PickupBatman and Linda

Pop Up Rescue with two Euth Listed Cats!

Batman was able to get two Euth Listed cats to their new furever home in Palm Bay. Their names were Alana, an 8-year-old FIV+ white and Brown Tabby, and Trouble, a 7-year-old FIV+ Orange Tabby. Both found as strays and brought to Orange County Animal Services where they became long time residents. Cats with FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) are often times overlooked due to their condition but in reality are pawsitively adoptable. These two were in real danger of being put down because of their condition and long-term status. Luckily Urgent Cats of Central Florida were on the case and were able to shed light on their urgent status. An awesome Rescue named United Paws was able to pull the cats and find them a forever home. There was just one more piece to the puzzle that was left and that was transporting these fur babies to their new loving home. A good friend of Batman’s and huge ally to cats in need named Miche reached out and made him aware of these Felines predicament. Within hours of hearing the situation Batman jumped into his Rescue Batmobile and is happy to report Trouble and Alana are living their best lives with their super amazing forever momma Jo!

Hello there everyone! The Dark Knight here checking in. Rescue number four has been completed and ironically enough had four furry rescue critters to. The four cats that were rescued were named Dakota, DD, Khloe, and Octavia (who was quite the trouble maker trying to crawl under Batman’s feet but was also a sweet heart). Batman drove all the way from Titusville, Florida to Richmond, Virginia, where he left them in the care of another awesome volunteer Diana. In the 11 hours they spent with Batman he barely heard a peep out of them. He thinks it must of been the similar ears. They were truly a pleasure to transport. Their story begins in Florida we’re their disabled owner got evicted from her house and had no place to stay. She had to do what she had to do to put a roof over her head so she ended up getting a hotel to figure things out, only one problem. They wouldn’t allow her cats. Their owner didn’t know what to do and was faced with the tough decision to put her babies into the shelter system, as she didn’t have a Florida address anymore. As luck would have it an awesome lady named Robyn who helps run Rescue Transport USA came to the rescue and offered to foster these kitties for a whole month till a plan could be made to transport these bundles of joy to her fiancé who lived in New Jersey. After a two-day journey and over 15 hours in multiple cars they are now safe and sound and able to take a well needed catnap. Till the next rescue! -Batman

Hello everyone! Batman here with some good news! Koko a Tennessee Tree Brindle has been delivered safely from her foster home in Largo, Florida to her forever home in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Koko’s story begins in Tampa where she was found wondering around the streets. Eventually the good old dogcatcher caught her and she ended up at the Pet Resource Center of Tampa where she stayed, waited, and hoped that she might catch the interest of a loving would be adopter. Alas that day didn’t come and like so many dogs before her she was sadly put on the Euthanasia list. Luckily for Koko a young lady, and her mother Crisitne, weren’t about to let such a sweet dog such as herself be euthanized. Hours before Koko was about to be put down they took her under their caring wings and gave her a second chance at life. Koko’s next journey would take her on an eight-hour road trip with the Dark Knight himself to be delivered to her loving forever family in the fresh air of the Smokey Mountains.

Hello there citizens, hope you all are doing well. Batman has just completed his second rescue mission! He was part of an awesome Doobert team that helped bring Ollie, one of the coolest Shih Tzu’s Batman’s ever met, to his forever home in Umatilla, Florida. Ollie’s story began in Ohio where he was able to escape from an Amish puppy Mill situation. Dogs in these puppy mills are treated like livestock and left to withstand poor conditions. There are anywhere from 10 to 1,000 dogs on these puppy mill farms and they spend their entire lives in cages only to be taken out to breed. Luckily Carolyn with Story Tellers Express Rescue was able to get Ollie out of there! Ollie then went to live all the way up North in Canton New York (that’s almost to Canada!) with his awesome foster parent Cyndi. Ollie’s next journey would bring him all the way to Sunny Florida to escape the 14-degree Cold. Over 20 different volunteers would make Ollie’s transport down to Florida possible. Thanks to these amazing people Batman was able to drop Ollie off to his forever parents George and Jo, who also happened to have a best friend for him named Gizmo. Ollie was a great riding companion and sat right on Batman’s lap the whole way there. Batman thinks Ollie knew where he was going and was excited for his new lease on life with his loving forever family! Have a good day everyone! Batman Signing off.

Happy New Year Everyone! The end of 2018 was quite the emotional roller coaster for Batman. He lost his best friend David who passed away peacefully in his sleep. It was an honor for Batman4Paws to be one of the Charities listed on his friends memorial program. The outpouring of support from the Sullivan Family and Friends has been truly heart warming. In wanting to memorialize his childhood friend in some way Batman has vowed to name Batman4Paws first adoptable rescue David after his best friend, so keep your eyes peeled for when that happens! So far 2019 has brought many exciting opportunities. The first news I would like to share with you all is that Batman4Paws has been selected to be GoFundMe’s April Hero of the Month! Batman will also be doing a podcast to talk about his efforts to help empty all the cages and give you tips on how you can help too. In addition to this news Batman has his second official rescue lined up for February 3rd. He will be helping a 2 year old Shih-tzu pup named Ollie, who was a former Amish Puppy mill dog, get from New York all the way down here to sunny florida where his StoryTellers Express Rescue Foster home will be waiting for him. If you fancy Ollie click the StoryTellers link above to find out how to adopt him! Batman himself may just drop him off at your door ;). The last bit of news I would like to share with you all is about Batman’s trusty side kick Robin. He has his first day of Therapy dog Training this Saturday January 19th and will be finished with the program near the end of February. Once Robins Therapy credentials are received both Batman and Robin will be making regular trips to the Florida Hospital Children’s wing to bring about as many smiles as we can. The first couple weeks of 2019 have shaped up to be quite eventful. Stay tuned for more updates as they roll in. Batman Signing off.
